I was watching an episode of one of the new reality shows (Hells Kitchen in fact) a few weeks back in which I noticed some patterns in the workforce. What I realized is that with this show (and others like it) the importance of working as a team is stressed very heavily. I would say that most contestants are looking at the prize money and look past this key element. Usually it is the best team player that wins the top prize or at least comes close to winning.
I thought about this and immediately thought of how my IT team functions. Typically the best employees are the biggest team players and are usually rewarded more. By putting the team first they actually make themselves achieve their own personal goals quicker. Let’s be honest, we all want to make a bit more money, be the new project lead, or be considered for that promotion, and the quickest way this is done is to prove to your boss that you can work well in a team. I have had and seen employees that were very good at their job, but never get the prize they were after because they could not make the transition to working in a team very well.
Now aside from this I realized that it is sometimes easy to see things when you are not involved in the situation (ie: on the show). So I recommend to take a step back and look at your current situation. Make sure you are part of the team and it will be noticed.
